Hard metal chairs with attached desks with little room for movement aren’t comfortable for hours on end each day. Physical activity has been proven, over and over again, to improve academic performance. If kids can't sit still for eight hours straight, then maybe we shouldn't expect them to.
For my students, having the flexibility to move around while working and be comfortable at the same time is a key factor in their successes. Studies have shown that flexibility encourages agency. Flexible seating would allow the students to choose independent or group seating setups that they feel best support their academic and/or emotional needs.
Having stools, comfortable chairs, lowered tables with pillows, lap desks, etc. allow them to move but, also stay focused. This will optimize the students' learning by increasing on-task behaviors and minimizes their breaks/need to move around.
Please help me attain my goal of getting my students the seating they need. Thank you!
