I teach a special education class of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. They have a range of disabilities including autism, learning disabilities, language disabilities and emotional disabilities. What they all have in common is that they are students and they all learn. The question I ask myself over and over is how can they learn, and how will they learn. To that end I have had to be very creative, but I am always rewarded as students break through barriers. My students' social and learning struggles challenge me and inspire me to make a better classroom, school and world for them. I often find myself in the roll of an advocate for my students in addition to being a their teacher. To that end I am grateful for principals and teachers that support inclusion and welcome my students to learn in their classrooms. As a special education teacher, I teach my students, but am also creating a community that can care and support my students beyond my classroom.
