The students that enter my art room are young women from all over the city, with various backgrounds. The majority of the girls are black and Hispanic, and come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many of them might be the first from their family to graduate high school and attend college. Our school acknowledges the struggles these children meet and help prepare them to be career- and college-ready by offering a myriad of Advanced Placement courses, college field trips, and partnerships with businesses to provide externships. The students have proven to be resilient, eager to learn, and ready to prove that no matter where they came from, no matter what boundaries exist for women, they will succeed.
