I am currently tilting back on 2 legs of my dining room chair as I type this on my laptop. Why is it fair of me to expect 10-11 year old children to focus when I, a 31 year old adult, apparently cannot without tilting back on my chair? I currently have 2 wiggle stools in my classroom. As I greet students to come in, they hurriedly ask me permission to sit on the wiggle stools. I have observed that students are using these wiggle stools in an appropriate way, not using them for fun or goofing off (which surprised me!). They also exchange the stools with the classroom chairs at the end of the period demonstrating a sense of responsibility. When children present the difficulty of focus, they may miss or neglect to retain information. If I am able to present them with a possible solution to this, why aren't I? As a reliable adult figure in students' lives, I strive to provide them with not only trust and security, but an environment that enables them to learn and retain the curriculum. I will be honest and say that if someone presented me with the idea of "wiggle stools" prior to my teaching, I would be very hesitant. Having been in a classroom and witnessing what this simple solution does for my students is remarkable. If I am unable to acquire the resources needed to provide my students with these resources, I will strive to do it out of pocket over the years to come, as they are more than deserving.
