Spreading a joy and love of reading is an important part of my classroom. We spend a lot of time talking about picking books that are a good fit. My students are very apt at finding books for independent reading time , but the problem occurs when they are in a small guided reading group with me. Guided reading is small group instruction that is differentiated to student reading level. The real challenge is finding interesting books at a specific reading level, and having enough for the the entire group. Differentiated instruction is an integral aspect of my classroom. I firmly believe that at any level, students should be able to read a text that is interesting and engaging. This has been a real struggle in my classroom to find enough books to meet with my groups of students.
These books are both fiction and nonfiction texts that share a similar theme, and I am so excited to talk about a topic and explore it through narrative and nonfiction! What an amazing way to engage with content in a developmentally appropriate way.
