The students I am currently teaching come from a very urban area. We are a 100% free lunch school. We have a very diverse population with students who are sometimes coming from refugee camps. Most of the students come from a bilingual background and come from families who are typically below the poverty line. My students love music and often wish we had more instruments so we could do more complicated things within our class. They have also shown me true dedication and skill within their rhythm studies while we have been doing rhythm karate. I was hoping for the next step with my students is that we would be able to transfer the skills we have learned aurally to instrumental playing which I know they will be more than excited to do. As a music teacher, empowering students through the arts is my goal;and giving my students the ability to transfer the skills they've learned to real instruments will help my students to do that.
