I teach a group of fifty first grade students who are part of a Chinese Dual Immersion class in Utah. While our students are all English speaking students, they have the opportunity to learn a second language--a skill that will give them a step up when they become adults. Every day our students spend half a day in an English classroom learning the skills they need for literacy. They spend the other half of the day in a classroom where they are learning to speak Chinese. Our students are learning the skills and knowledge they need in math, science, and social studies through this new language. They will continue in this program through sixth grade.
