Our school is located in the diverse, vibrant, urban community of Roxbury. The children in my classroom represent a beautiful mosaic of cultures and are from various countries including Cape Verde, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Brazil, India, Turkey, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Many of them have immigrated to the United States or belong to families of immigrants. Their family members work relentlessly, sometimes holding two or three jobs, to ensure that they have shelter and basic necessities. Several of the parents of my students work during irregular hours and as a result have difficulty spending quality time with their children. Additionally, due to their limited financial resources, families are unable to expose the children to educational venues such as the aquarium or science museums. For my students, our room is a place where they can explore and think about their ideas about the world!
