What is a light table? Simply put, a light table is a table illuminated with light. You may be familiar with them if you have ever seen an X-ray or you may associate it with photography or art. However, a light table can also be an essential tool in the development of young children. A light table has been proven to have many benefits in a classroom. One benefit that stood out to me was the ability to hold a child's attention for a longer period of time than a traditional activity in a classroom. For my wiggly Kindergarteners, I know that a light table has the potential of being an important learning tool, especially to those who may need a little extra help focusing.
Children are naturally drawn to the glow of the table and are often calmed by the visual stimulation as they explore the center. The possibilities for a light table in the classroom are endless. A light table can be used for open-ended play experiences, arts and crafts, science, math, literacy, and beyond. There are an abundance of light table tools, ranging from store-bought ones to colorful cups to leaves on the ground. A light table is perfect support for a classroom filled with 20 curious, energetic, eager learners. It has the ability to be a powerhouse of learning in the classroom.
