My middle school students are a unique bunch of kids that are in that awkward stage of wanting independence while still needing approval. Through my class, they find a voice for their true self that they sometimes are too shy to openly show but are willing to express in their artwork. However, we are lacking some of the basics needed for our art class like a drying rack for paintings. My school is a Title One school, but unlike most Title One schools, our mission is to send all students to college and help them succeed in a global economy. With a limited school budget, we can only get the essentials of what we need. My students deserve more.
Teaching them art is not just about making pretty paintings and drawings, art education teaches students how to observe, experiment, self-evaluate, reflect, persevere, innovate, envision solutions, appreciate, craftsmanship, and, yes, even how to clean up.
