At our school, we believe in educating the whole child—academics and character. Our character program is based on Character Strengths and Virtues, which shows that students with 24 key strengths are more likely to succeed. We teach these traits explicitly and celebrate them weekly with activities aligned to the strength of the week. For example, during our focus on self-control, students use Ritz crackers and M&M’s to create emotion faces while learning to identify and regulate feelings. Celebrations are also a time for students to reflect on growth and group success. To reward their hard work, I provide books, snacks, socks, hats, and school supplies. Despite limited resources, we are committed to creating joyful, meaningful learning experiences.
