I teach in an urban middle school. Because of its location, I call our school a 2-in-1 model. We have only two Language Arts "tracks." The Honors level kids come from the homes of doctors, professors, writers, and lawyers. Their homes are filled with support, expectations, love, and books. Lots of books.
I teach on the other side of the "tracks." My students don't have the same level of support, expectation, or love of books. Some of them don't have both parents at home. Many of them don't have either. What my students do have is a yearning. They have an appetite. They are eager to consume and devour. I can serve them with a rich diet but taste is key at this stage. They need to sample and develop a palette for fine writing. And in seventh grade, I start the year with appetizers, like the titles I am requesting.
