This year, the theme of our annual African American History program, is "When I Grow Up." Children across the nation were witness to our nation's first African American president serving not one, but two terms. While it is true that during the majority of President Obama's term, my current students were quite young, they know he was president for eight years. They saw him stand as the nation's leader with their own eyes. The goal for our program is by focusing on "living" high achievers of color, our students will be reminded that when they grow up, they can be whatever they want to be. With hard work, and determination, they can even be president of the United States of America.
