Technology is the future and one's access to technology is a good predictor of educational and professional success. The majority of my students' only access to technology is their parents' smartphones, which of course limits the benefits that they receive from the technology. The educational sites that I would like for my students to access are unable to be used on smartphones and must be used with traditional laptops or desktops.
So, here is my dilemma. In my classroom sit three desktop computers that I have had since my first year of teaching (this is my 11th year), and even then, they were not new. Due to their slow speed and spotty service, these computers are virtually useless, and cause more problems than what they are worth. "Ms. Anderson, can we use the computers?" is the question that I field every day from my students, which is followed by my usual reply, "Maybe tomorrow." Their disappointed little faces break my heart, and I hope to soon be able to respond, "Yes, you may."
