I teach first grade, at a Title I school. My classroom is approximately 90% African American and roughly 80% receive free or reduced price school breakfast and lunch, based on their family's income. A large percentage of my students are from military families and have family members that are deployed for a long period of time. Our school has an extremely transient student body where we have students constantly moving in from other schools. At the end of the school year each of my students are expected to be reading on grade level. When students are not getting the support they need at home this can be a challenge. I want them to love reading and want to continue to do so even when they are not with me.
