I teach full day Kindergarten. My class of 5-6 year olds has an average of 24 students, over 1/3 of whom are English language learners. My school also has a population of over 60% of families whose children qualify for free/reduced price lunches each day. My students are energetic and have a strong love of learning. Many enter kindergarten knowing few letters or sounds and finish the year reading sight words and basic emergent books. Even with that growth, about 50% are still below the expected level when they move on to first grade.
