Having access to wonderful new books written by Black authors and poets will enrich the lives of my students. I am committed to incorporating more diverse voices in my teaching practice. For example, some of the books I have chosen will be read aloud in class or during online meetings. Others will provide the opportunity for students to learn about historical events from new perspectives.
Reading stories about people who are different from themselves will help students build empathy and understanding about the history of marginalized groups. This type of learning is essential in cultivating communication skills, positive interactions in class, and a strong community.
