The use of scientific calculators is a daily activity in my math classes in order to solve equations and perform operations accurately and efficiently. Having access to a calculator in class will help my students focus their time and attention on the higher mathematical skills at hand and not basic arithmetics.
These scientific calculators will help bridge the gap between equity and achievement among my students. Many of my students are students of color and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Their families simply cannot afford to purchase a scientific calculator of their own. Having a calculator in class will help my students build the mathematical fluency needed to be successful in math class.
