Most of my students don't realize that there is more to life than living in poverty. It's hard for them to imagine that they control the paths of their lives. My students live and go to school in a primarily rural area and most of their parents work in the fields or the packing sheds. As English Language Learners, who are reading at 2 or more years below their grade level, they struggle everyday at school, and when they go home. As a teacher, I want to instill in them the ability to see beyond their neighborhood and the belief that they do have choices. With perseverance, integrity, and the amazing power of positive support, my students can begin exploring their possibilities.
