I am lucky enough to teach an amazing group of bright and beautiful 5th graders. They are future change-makers, without a doubt.
My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds and the majority speak Spanish, Cantonese, and Vietnamese in their homes. Along with this wonderful diversity in language, ethnicity and culture, comes a wide variance in academic proficiency, as well as mastery of the socio-emotional skills critical for school success. My school, Hillcrest Elementary, identifies as a Community School, which is a strategy for organizing community resources around student success. We subscribe to a holistic view of our students and employ an integrated focus on academics, socio-emotional supports, and family engagement activities that lead not only to improved student learning, but also to stronger families and healthier communities.
