I have developed a leadership program for our 5th grade students; Pearls for Girls and Guys with Ties. The programs consists of 24 (12 girls and 12 boys) students. The girls and boys will meet, separately, once a week with the Counselor to have group discussions on how to handle different situations and challenges they may encounter. The students will also assist the Counselor in various No Place for Hate activities and projects for the student population of Cooper that relate to the character traits (Trustworthy, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship). At the completion of the program, the students will attend a banquet and receive an award. The girls will receive pearls and the boys will receive ties.
I believe, now more than ever, we need to encourage our youth to become leaders instead of followers. It is imperative that we guide them in becoming positive examples for their peers in doing what is right and not what is popular. By donating to this project, I will be able to create an environment that is different from the typical classroom. The leadership meeting room should uniquely standout and these chairs will assist in accomplishing this goal. The storage unit will help keep the students stay organized, as they will be able to place all of their materials and project information in their designated spots. Each time the students walk into the leadership meeting room, they will be welcomed into a professional, yet grade appropriate, environment. They will know that once they enter the room, they are there to make a positive impact on their fellow classmates, younger students, and their community.
