My students have low English language proficiency. Even when they listen to a story, they struggle to grasp the concepts and meaning. Through puppets and felt pieces that coordinate with our read alouds, students will be able to recreate the experiences of the characters, building both their oral language and comprehension.
My students lack real life experiences, and need materials to form the important connections between themselves as readers and the books we read. After reading with a teacher, these colorful characters and props will allow students to work with peers and independently to recreate the language and experiences of the characters we read about. They will build the confidence of students and help them grow in language, creativity, and engagement. Forming this foundation in speaking and listening now will help boost achievement for these students as future readers and writers.
