I am requesting authentic, engaging reading materials for my students this year because reading is an essential part of language acquisition. Through reading, students not only learn more about the language, but also about different cultures found in Spanish speaking countries.
When making my book list, I considered the unique interests and experiences of my students & tried to find texts that would reflect their various identities. I also chose books at a variety of levels to meet my students' varied needs. There are books for beginner language learners which reuse high-frequency vocabulary so that what the student is reading is comprehensible. Additionally, there are more challenging books that will meet the needs of my heritage speakers.
Students will have free choice reading several times a week. They will also have the books available to read anytime they finish a task early. I have requested multiple copies of some books because it will allow students to create a book club and work through reading the text with a small group or partner.
