My school is an inner city public school. It is a Traditional Academy which means the children wear uniforms and must wait on a list if they want to get in. I have 23 students this year, which is small compared to some other classes of 30-33.
Curious, willing, imaginative, creative, shy, afraid of failing, sad, special needs, neglected... Are some of the words I can use to describe the first graders that I teach. It is a challenge each day keeping them engaged, especially due to the demands of the new Common Core.
Getting parents engaged is difficult as well -- phones are disconnected, numbers change, guardians change. The inconsistencies that occur in the homes make it difficult for me to keep connected as much as I would like.
My students need a lot of caring, discipline, and guidance. I am a positive role model in their lives, and when they make the mistake of calling me "Mom," I take it as a compliment.
