My students have spent their entire school lives together. They come from rural backgrounds, some from ranches, some from the tiny town of 200 people that surrounds the school. They are lively, friendly, and they enjoy learning.
Most of them are English language learners, and most of them speak Spanish at home. All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
For nearly all of them, the school is their link to the outside world. They greatly enjoy the computer lab and are fascinated by technology. The addition of pen tablets to our computers would allow them to draw and write freely. As it is, they have to make do with computer mice, which are notoriously difficult to draw with. Just try writing your name with one!
Our school runs very much like a family. We are small enough so that all the teachers know all the students, and know which ones have brothers and sisters in the school. It is a wonderful place in which to work and teach.
