I have a very enthusiastic group of 5th graders. My first questionnaire, on day one of school, asked what their favorite subjects were. Over 60% said Math and Science! I have to foster that (and increase it).
The school is a 98% English learner population. This means we focus heavily on getting them proficient in English. The concentration of ELA means we have to be creative with our science and social studies blocks. Our students crave science as it allows them to express themselves in ways not usually accessible in the classroom.
We are in a high poverty area, which means that many of my children do not have access to the Internet at home. A few have resources, such as family iPods or computers, but their access is limited. This restricts assignments and expectations of external learning. So any science they get is from my classroom only.
