My students are lively, energetic, generally excitable kids from all over the city. Some of them travel over an hour every morning just to get to our public high school. Though our school has a dedicated staff, our district is incredibly underfunded and so our curriculum is dictated by our limited resources. Even so, my students always bring great questions about race and privilege, freedom and war, the past and the future, and our English class has been so much better for their willingness to raise some deep and complicated issues.
I also run a ping pong club after school. Their questions are just as good, but typically revolve more around the rules of the game and why they aren't yet allowed to smash the ball.
