As a physical education teacher, who serves 340 students in the most dangerous city in the United States, I am often stuck on how to encourage students to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch five days a week. Exercising outside and developing a passion for fitness is often sidetracked for Literacy. Due to our districts' low performing reading levels, our students do not receive the state's mandate for 150 minutes of physical education a week. Our students are often forced to eliminate the opportunity to be active in replacement for reading and math. Being located in the most dangerous city in the United States, our young students are unable to enjoy the outside atmosphere due to the school grounds.
