My students are challenged with living in a impoverished home setting (100% free/reduced price lunch) where English is not the common home language as well as existing in a high-stakes testing environment at school.
In spite of these challenges, my students are hardworking, energetic, and positive about their future! During our summer school session we invited our graduated fifth graders to attend a voluntary summer school session where they could prepare for sixth grade and meet their sixth grade teachers -- amazingly, on the first day I had 26 students in my class. Growing up, my summers were filled with camping trips with my family and fishing with my friends and brother. Where I chose to waste away my summer days growing up, these students chose to come to school.
I could not be any more proud of these students that are so enthusiastic about making a change in their lives!
