Choosing a core novel to read in class is always tricky. This novel is perfect because of the storied elements. The theme, characters, setting, and plot mirror the daily lives of most of my students. Since the elements are so familiar to my readers, it will make the assessments and lessons easier for them to complete. Given the limitations on our students ability to purchase books at home, reading a book at school which represents their cultural background will definitely help support and foster their love of reading. Everyone has a book which was a turning point in their life long love for reading. Let's make it The House on Mango Street.

About my class
