The Ladibug document camera will help me engage and guide students through various literacy-building, text-based activities by modeling more effectively...in real time. For example, it allows me to model for students the correct way to leverage note-taking strategies (like Cornell Notes) to maximize their reading comprehension. As we read through an article or passage out loud together, I can take notes on paper and the document reader projects my handwritten notes on the large screen so students can easily follow along with their notes. Then I can go back and annotate and/or highlight the notes... so students see how to actually USE their notes to store information in their long-term memory through repetition. Teaching students how to effectively utilize their notes by increasing their interactions/repetitions with the content will increase their reading comprehension AND depth of engagement with the content. These skills are transferable and should help students in other classes as well.
Increasing reading comprehension skills builds literacy confidence and will directly impact my students this year and next year as they enter high school. Note taking and text annotation is just the beginning though! Students will use this technology more than I will! They will use it to present and analyze primary sources, their writing activities, and to demonstrate their annotation and/or note-taking skills for the class. Also, the visual display of student work (primary source analysis, etc...) will facilitate whole group discussions. The sky is the limit with this piece of technology!
Thank you for your support!!
