We don't have much in terms of hands-on learning resources for essential 21st century skills. The seven CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Starter Kit will take the idea of programming and coding, something we discuss in class, and make it a hands-on activity in which students will learn first hand. Learning to code in a variety of programming languages from Scratch and Python to coding original musical masterpieces with Sonic Pi will provide the students with a strong foundation for possible future careers involving computers and technology. The freshmen and sophomores focus on Sustainable Development Goals as created by the UN to solve problems on a local and global scale. Students diagnose an issue and work to solve it through the means of technology. Juniors and Seniors explore IT systems and how they work. A large part of the course is an understanding of computer hardware and robotics. This could be a great resource for allowing them the opportunity to learn independently how these systems work.
It's hard to imagine a world in which computer programming has not had a significant effect on the world around us. This is a growing field for future careers and as a technology teacher I would be doing a disservice to my students if I did not allow them this opportunity to learn. My students are independent learners who thrive on hands-on activities.
