I teach 7th Grade Reading and Writing at Central Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas. With 3 classes of around 30 students, I teach 90 students a day. After my first year in the Kansas City Kansas Public School District, I've learned that resources are often limited and had to take creative measures to get good stories in the hands of my students. This year we read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, a modern adaptation of The Jungle Book that replaces Mowgli and his animal family, with a rescued orphan dubbed Nobody "Bod" Owens by his cemetary community of ghosts. Students have loved listening to the audiobook, my dramatic class read outlouds, or reading the graphic novel adaptation pages I had to copy and paste on a shared Google Document because we only had one copy of the book!
