My students are bright, enthusiastic kids who come from an urban environment that does not always give them great chances for success. The school itself is a 100% free lunch school and is Title 1 funded. Unfortunately, none of the funding that goes into the core level classes from Title 1 is allowed to be used for the Arts classes. That means that many of the luxury advantages in education that other classes receive (laptop carts, iPad carts, desktop computers in each class, etc.) my students do not receive. The students do not have technology outside my own personal laptop, that I bring to the class, so that they can hear and study musical pieces for performances. All theory training is done with pencil and paper. With a total of over 80 students in the choral program, you can imagine the struggle we go through each and every day trying to study and stretch materials out for each class period and each student. The students work so hard in the conditions they are given.
