The best student writers are always the biggest readers. This is not a coincidence. They are being confronted with example after example of proper grammar and varied sentence construction. More importantly, being absorbed in a story leads to critical thinking, wherein young minds begin to consider their values. That level of engagement cannot occur, however, if the student isn't having any fun.
True learning can only take place within a context of joy. I open each class with time dedicated to reading independently chosen material. My dream is to build a small but rich library where students are excited to walk into the room and pull down current stories that they find magical and inspiring and, most of all, relevant to their lives.
From FABLEHAVEN to THE HATE U GIVE, I have selected recently released books with a wide range of genres and reading levels. My kids are searching for good stories, and it's my responsibility to provide them. I can't do it without your help, though, due to the school library's closure. We can't let that stop us. We must refuse to shrug our shoulders. Let's build something new.
