I teach high school math in inner-city Detroit and run an after school music program. I moved to the city three years ago, after spending 25 years teaching in Portland, OR. Detroit is an awesome city.
Two years ago a group of students came to me wanting an after-school music club. Since then the club has grown to a program focusing on music, dance, and choral, with a membership of 50 students.
Unity Music is the name of our program, with a student generated mission statement.
We are a collection of humble friends coming together through music, which inspires us to promote peace. Drawing from the rich musical history in Detroit, we incorporate these influences with sounds from cultures from all parts of the world.
