Many of our students come to us with deficits in their math ability and depend on after-school tutoring to achieve good grades in their math class and, eventually, to achieve high scores on standardized tests. But after an already-long school day, and with a myriad of barriers to healthy eating and sleeping habits, students are mentally and physically tired, and many do not choose to stay after school or struggle with academic tasks that should be simple.
Access to healthy snacks during after-school tutoring will allow my students to maintain and/or recharge their mental energy and make greater gains towards their goals of A's in math class and higher scores on the SAT. While standardized testing is detested by many experts in the field of education, it is still one of the key factors in an applicant's candidacy for college admission. Thus, educators must support our students in doing their very best on the SAT as well as in improving their GPA.
