Students will use the D-Nets to sample the aquatic life living in the stream and vernal pools on our school campus, and the tape measures for recording stream measurements. Once they have collected evidence of the aquatic life, students will then use aquatic macroinvertebrate identification cards and vernal pool poster to identify the organisms that they collected. After that, students will record their findings in our database, and post their observations to the Vital Signs website – a powerful online learning environment that connects them to a community of experts and each other. Through the site, students and citizen scientists can comment on each other’s observations, species experts can confirm findings, and scientists can pose research questions and then use the data to inform their studies. Students are also able to use the data to track changes over time, which can be used to help educate the public and protect the local resources.
