My students are fantastic kids who constantly show they want to learn, and my first year of teaching I saw flickers of brilliance in them every day. I teach in an urban school that is 99% African American, about 80% of whom receive free or reduced price lunch. Although my school, an 8 year-old charter school, has significant room for improvement, I have seen individual classes that thrive because of the actions of teachers that make the classroom more appealing and routine-driven. My students can achieve tremendous goals with consistency and high expectations.
