As our students are learning the new space in the performing arts center, the safety markings purchased by the project will help them create and maintain a professional space that reduces the chance for injury while they learn set construction. The previous space we used for set construction amounted to a large closet with very few of the things needed for an effective learning space.
The equipment from this project will not only help with our current productions, but will go a long way in establishing a culture of safety and professionalism among our technical theatre students.
Part of the instruction for our upper level technical theatre course is design and management of the scene shop. Our shop has a mantra that is the focus for all things safety - "A place for everything and everything in its place." Some of the pieces of equipment in this project will help the students to keep not only a safe space, but an organized space which will allow for improved instruction in technical theatre as students develop real-world skills that can benefit them in their life after high school.
