My Little Village (Chicago) students live in a low-income community in which sports facilities and equipment are very limited. Our basketball sports program has been quickly growing by having over 60+ participants each year. The program gives our youth an opportunity to grown as person in a challenging neighborhood. Students usually go to far facilities to just play one game of basketball. Currently, we have two gym facilities, but only one of them has appropriate sized basketball hoops. Its extremely difficult to facilitate effective practices with having 5 basketball teams share one gym. The portable basketball hoops will give our children more opportunities to practice and improve their skills.
Students join our after-school programs to be in a safe place were they feel respected, acknowledge, and cared for. With additional resources, we can create additional locations like the ones we made students feel welcome. The results have shown an increase in school pride and success in the classroom. In addition, having additional hoops can help create intramural competitions to keep the kids active all year long. My students have already displayed their interest for the game, and this project will only help flourish their experience of after-school programs. "Take a Winning Shot in Our Youth Basketball Teams"
