For whatever reason, be it a learning disability, a language barrier, or poor habits, my sixth grade students enter the school year with reading levels that range from a below reading level to a fourth grade reading level. We are a fairly low income community living in tough times. We have a wide variety of ethnicity at my school. When you're twelve years old and have difficulties reading, it makes everything that much more difficult. The reading program I teach encourages my students to enjoy reading. We try to overcome any bad habits, language barriers, and learning disabilities to open student eyes to the joy of reading. I usually have a minimum advancement of two grade levels per student in one year. Some have advanced four grade levels. That's progress!
