The requested Arduino kits and the sensors that accompany them will be used to teach students 8-12 both how to program, and how to solve problems. I am actively working on lessons that will not only teach students the use of these devices, but also how to take the resources at their disposal and use them to solve a range of problems with technology.
Students will use the Arduino kits to learn how to perform tasks that help with daily life, like checking the weather using a light dependent resistor, building a calculator with a numeric display, or learning to keep track of time with Arduino time.
Students will also discover the programming that goes behind all of these practical tasks is not as easy - or full proof - as they might think (according to Unix, the world ends in 2038, because we run out of seconds in our 32 bit clocks...) Things like this engage students and make them want to solve the problem - which is exactly why I would like to have these tools in my classroom.
