Social Studies are the forgotten child in the land of academia. Emphasis has been placed on math and science in order to prepare future generations for the high tech jobs of tomorrow. While it is understandable that these are important aspects of our future, we seem to have forgotten about the importance of looking into our shared pasts and fostering an understanding of who we are and how we got here. Using the skills taught in Social Studies classrooms we are preparing the next generation of civic minded members of a democratic society. People who know how to understand the issues our country and world faces, and know how to make informed decisions based on the ever important skills of critical thinking and empathy.
