My students have many performances throughout the year and as a part of the curriculum, I teach the importance of proper posture. Currently, the Band room has 55 non-musical ensemble classroom chairs, some borrowed from other classrooms that are terrible on a musicians' back. My students complain day after day about the strain these chairs put on their back and shoulders for there is no support in the chairs' structure.
With the program growing exponentially, more chairs will be needed to promote that growth successfully. In the band alone we have increased from 25 students in the marching band last year to 65 students currently this year. In the choir, we have increased from 50 to 80 students.
Additionally, in order to perform, they must first learn how to do so properly with appropriate equipment. With the ability to perform properly, these students will be able to maximize their musical performance and achieve more than they could imagine.
