My band students are the back bone of the school when it comes to school spirit. We excite the crowds on Friday nights at football games and wow the community at different events throughout the city. Band is not just an extracurricular activity, its a way of life and an way out for my students. For a lot of my students band is the main reason they come to school at all. Their love for music drives them to be better people and better overall students.
With the purchase of these instruments more students will have the opportunity to expand their musical talents. Because more than 90% of my students come from lower income households they can then take those talents and turn them into college scholarships.
Currently we have two classes with over 40 students in each sharing instruments. Because of this they are not able to take the instruments home to practice. This limits their ability to work on and improve their playing level. My goal is to provide each student with their own instrument. Music and arts programs are in danger around the country. Programs are being cut out of schools every year and because of this more students are losing that life changing experience that music provides. Without band in schools who will be the musicians of the future? Who will be that next American Idol?
