I have the greatest students in the world (I'm pretty confident this is fact, not opinion!). The majority of them come to my class with no musical experience but show great dedication throughout the year and are capable and accomplished musicians by the time they leave.
Our school is in a middle class neighborhood within a large urban metropolis, however many of our students are bused in from various neighborhoods throughout the city, having a long journey to and from school. Over my 17 years here I have been fortunate to develop a strong connection with several of the communities that house our students.
Unfortunately, with decreased funding and increased attention to standardized test scores, our school has seen several of our elective courses close over the last few years. The instrumental music program, however, is still going strong and our students are committed to preserving it.
