The middle school students at RCMS are special and gifted in many ways, but as with many Title I public schools, also find their community lacking in integral funding and resources. In the heart of their adolescence, my classroom is boisterous and bubbling with students just figuring out their personalities, or trying new one's on for size like a constantly churning turnstile. As no students are turned away from RCMS, there are many gracing our hallways in desperate need of a safe space. My art room plays host to a wide variety of special needs including a program called FLS (Functional Life Skills) dedicated to severe special needs students. While it can be quite difficult at times to wrangle the spirit of middle school students in the throes of their often confusing developmental age, I consider it a great honor to provide not only a safe and fun environment, but one in which many "A-ha!" moments can be fostered.
