My students are in an inner-city school in the heart of Brooklyn, with a majority receiving free or reduced school lunches. They are in a scanning school, so whatever devices they do have cannot be brought into the building. They want to succeed in a 21st Century Classroom, but the outdated technology we can provide will not permit them to do so. They are an inquisitive bunch, questioning the world around them, without the technology to accomplish this in the classroom. Nearly all of them enter the school with reading and math scores below grade level and they struggle with the material once they get home. They want to succeed in school, but they become discouraged with the work once they have to perform on their own at home. They enjoy coming to school every day and take advantage of whatever resources that we do provide them, but they need the technology to fully support them inside the classroom.
