My students are from an urban low-SES area of Pennsylvania. The city is economically depressed and budget cuts have taken the power out of my hands to supply relevant and engaging texts for my students. Many of these students have little positive influence to read at home and come from a background of little or no education. I have been using student-driven literature circles to begin to affect change in the lives of these students, but more, newer books are always needed to keep this project going. My students have tremendous potential, but need an investment made in them to help them realize that potential.
